Supporting Chinese businesses in Singapore

Singapore as your natural gateway into ASEAN

For Chinese businesses expanding in ASEAN, Singapore is a natural first step. It combines strong connectivity, a stable operating environment and deep links with China — making it an effective base to establish a regional presence and manage cross-border growth.

Singapore is a leading global financial hub with a AAA credit rating from all three major credit agencies. It is Asia Pacific’s largest foreign exchange centre# and a key offshore renminbi clearing center.

HSBC supports Chinese businesses as they set up in Singapore and scale across the region, with on-the-ground expertise and solutions across trade, payments, FX and liquidity.

Why Singapore

As a major trading and financial hub, Singapore has the infrastructure and expertise that Chinese corporates need to effectively access other ASEAN markets. The country’s stable tax, legal and regulatory systems and business-friendly environment make it easier to do business here. With topnotch infrastructure and services, and a highly capable workforce, Singapore offers an excellent base to expand into the rest of ASEAN.

A regional treasury centre and treasury hub

As businesses expand across Southeast Asia, treasury complexity can escalate quickly — with multiple currencies, varying banking protocols, and different regulatory requirements governing the movement of funds. Cash can become fragmented across local accounts, visibility may reduce, and FX management can become less efficient. Singapore has become a leading location for regional treasury, with around 4,200 regional treasury centres and regional headquarters based here.

Asian Trading Singapore

The Singapore plus one model

China-headquartered businesses are increasingly adopting a “Singapore plus one” model, using Singapore as the regional HQ and treasury center, while building manufacturing and operations in Johor Bahru to balance control, connectivity and cost. The launch of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) in January 2025 is adding momentum, with steps to make cross-border set-up and day-to-day movement more seamless.

Singapore’s strength as a global financial centre and technology hub also adds to its appeal. The presence of major Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance, alongside many other tech firms, reinforces Singapore’s role as a gateway to international markets.
